Stratus9 were appointed by the Bay Learning Trust to undertake a survey of Morecambe Bay to develop a strategic approach to phasing and dealing with the building issues. This then developed into further project specific appointments.

One key area of concern highlighted through the survey stage was the dilapidated state of the ROSLA block being used for Art and the former ‘garage’ being used for Music. These buildings were completely unsuitable for teaching and not conducive to learning.

The buildings both suffered water ingress from failing roofs, asbestos materials in poor condition, unsuitable classrooms that didn’t meet the space requirements of the Building Bulletins or provide necessary resources, structural issues relating to general failure of the building fabric and were extremely thermally inefficient. All of these factors meant that the school were losing significant capital reserves on maintenance and short-term improvements none of which would extend the life of the building.

Following a successful grant application by Stratus9, Morecambe Bay Academy were awarded the necessary funding to make a real difference. Project managed by Stratus9 the new building was kitted out with future proofed infrastructure and technology to deliver subjects which year on year produce highly successful students with grades to match.

Although the project initially experienced planning related issues it was successfully delivered by Stratus9 on budget. The school now benefit from the immediate impact a new building can bring, but also the long-term effects which will hopefully present themselves by invigorated pride and pupil achievement.
