MORECAMBE BAY ACADEMY

Stratus9 were appointed by the Bay Learning Trust to undertake a survey of Morecambe Bay to develop a strategic approach to phasing and dealing with the building issues. This then developed into further project specific appointments.

Following a comprehensive review of the school site, it was evident that urgent fire safety compliance upgrades were required. If left unchecked they introduced unacceptable risks to life safety in the event of a fire.

Life Safety must always be of primary concern and the lack of appropriate fire compartmentation and/or detection around the school was alarming. In the event of a fire the outdated measures would be unable to prevent the free movement of smoke and fire around the building which could result in a catastrophic loss.

Working closely with the school Stratus9 designed, procured, achieved significant funding and managed on site these vital fire safety works to the main building. The works comprised:

• Replacing doors and frames not deemed compliant with the various Fire Safety Regulations,
• Installing a Category L1 level life protection fire alarm system to replace a defunct Category M manual alarm system,
• Installing high specification emergency lighting to all escape routes and key areas of the building with maintained and non-maintained types.

The school now benefits from fully certified fire doors that are in keeping with the aesthetic art deco appearance of the main building. The project was completed on budget and has provided added value through an enhanced visual appearance which benefit pupils, staff, and visitors.
